A while back I asked you for ideas for project I was working on, a video poking some good-natured fun at the nonprofit world. I’m happy to say that the video is now live! Many thanks to my partners-in-crime, Dawn, Brian, Beth, Nick, & Tara.
And of course, thank you to everyone who shared their suggestions!
From restoring strangers’ family photos damaged in Japan’s 2011 tsunami, to making online content more accessible to people with disabilities, these difference-makers are harnessing technology for the social good.
If you haven’t noticed the recent internet meme of “Sh*t” People Say” videos, I daresay you’re missing out. (Check out this “best of” collection to catch up.) The basic premise is to poke good-natured fun at specific groups of people, by making a caricature out of what those groups can [stereo]typically be heard saying.
Tech for Hippies has been on a summer hiatus (what better time for a blogging digital detox than when the sun is shining?), but will be kicking up again soon. In the meantime, please enjoy this little musical commentary – or should I say confession?
I recently ran across a couple creative examples for using technology as a pass-through vehicle to connect people within the “real world.”
First up: coin-operated vending machines have been around since the late 19th century, and most of us wouldn’t consider these machines as particularly cutting edge. But last month, Pepsi announced its new Social Vending System, featuring machines that interact with customers through text message-based gifting options (via a touchscreen).
Each workday, include at least 1 significant task that you can complete without using a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Give your eyes a break – just say “no” to Computer Vision Syndrome…
Attention all you cube dwellers, coffee shop entrepreneurs, bloggers, and other general desk-jobbers: your derrière is killing you.
Well, maybe not directly, but it’s sure not making you live any longer. Seriously, isn’t it time to do something about this? Read on…and I won’t even say I told you so.
Normally I post a new Serenity Challenge every other Monday, something to inspire you (and me) to bring one specific element of balance into our tech-heavy lives. Unfortunately, a stomach bug got the best of me over the weekend and I fell a bit behind.
So instead, this time I want to remind you of the first three challenges, and give you an extra week to really focus on each of these good habits. (And they actually go hand-in-hand — they’re all connected to having a balanced workday.)
This is a bit last-minute (sorry about that), but here’s a great learning opportunity for the marketers among you.
I’m a big believer in holistic, integrated communications, and so I heartily recommend a great webinar coming up tomorrow, “Integrating Your Online and Offline Marketing Into One Plan That Works.”
Let me ask you this — have you really bothered to put that vague notion of “good ergonomics = better health” into actual practice? Have you intentionally structured your work station in a way that is good for your body (and thus good for your productivity)?
I foolishly thought I was too young to pay attention to all that ergonomics business…until the pain in my neck got so bad that I had to go see a physical therapist. One new computer monitor riser later, problem solved — the pain was completely gone within one day. It was such a simple solution.
